San Bernardino County Jail originally opened in 1971 and served as the sole county jail for 20 years.  In the 1980’s, overcrowding became a prominent issue that lead to the need to build West Valley Detention Center which opened in 1991.  San Bernardino County Jail was closed for a while in the early 1990’s due to budgetary issues in the county.  The facility was reopened in 1994 when the Sheriff made an arrangement with the United States Marshall’s Service to house federal inmates.

For the past 10 years and currently, San Bernardino County Jail serves as the primary booking facility for East Valley area police and sheriffs.  On a daily basis, the facility houses about 850 inmates.  Generally, the daily population of the San Bernardino County Jail is made up of about 600 county inmates and about 350 federal inmates.  During the last 12 months, the facility has served booking purposes for over 20,000 arrestees brought in by police officers or sheriff’s deputies.

The United States Marshall’s Service uses the San Bernardino County Jail as a West Coast Hub for the housing and transportation of federal inmates.  This means the facility serves as a temporary detention center for inmates being transported between different federal Bureau of Prisons facilities on the West Coast.  Through this contract with the United States Marshall’s Service and federal grant awards the San Bernardino County Jail has been able to afford updating and renovating its facility.  Safety and security were at the forefront of these expenses with the addition of new metal detectors at the entrances and a state of the art security camera system.  These measures allow for staff to feel better supported when working in housing units and corridors.  Similarly inmates are afforded added protection should altercations occur and they’re actions are put into question.  Also with this money, the kitchen has been completely remodeled to better serve the inmate population.

Like many facilities, the San Bernardino County Jail hosts a program for local teenagers called the Juvenile Intervention Program. In 2001, the program began at the request of community leaders.  It serves juveniles between the ages of 13 years old and 17 years old.  This program’s mission is to show youth the error of their antisocial behaviors and to hopefully prevent them from becoming inmates at the jail.  In addition to working with the juveniles, the jail also provides programming for their parents on topics such as substance abuse, parenting styles, gang awareness, and communication styles.  Follow up with program participants has shown success for the program with many of the juveniles becoming productive members of society after the program.  San Bernardino County reports that over 4,000 juveniles have been through the Juvenile Intervention Program since 2004.

Visitation at San Bernardino County Jail – Transportation / Court Holding Center

Appointments for visit should be made one day in advance prior to the request of the visit. You must call the Visiting Center at (909) 887-0364 Wednesday through Sunday to schedule a visit. Visitors must arrive to check in 30 minutes prior to their scheduled visitation time. Visitors who arrive late will not be admitted into visitation. Subject to search are visitors, their belongings as well as their vehicles. Items that are prohibited are as follows:

• Tobacco Products

All children must be within an arm’s reach of the visitor they arrived with. If anyone fails to comply, visitation might be terminated. All minors must be accompanied by a responsible adult during the visitation.

Dress Code:

Visitors must comply with the dress code to be allowed to visit. Visitors who do not comply will be denied visitation. Prohibited attire includes, but is not limited to:

• Hats/hoodies
• Clothing/accessories with obscene or offensive language/pictures
• Sheer or see through garments
• Tank tops, halter tops, strapless/spaghetti strap tops
• Clothing that exposes breast/chest, midriff, genital/buttock
• Short skirts/dresses shorter then mid-thigh
• Clothing that reveals undergarments

Please note that shoes shall be worn always. Anyone who does not comply with the dress code will not be admitted for visitation.
