Racine County Juvenile Detention Center – Information and Programs

The Racine County Juvenile Detention Center serves children between the ages of 10 and 16.  These children have committed acts that resulted in an order from the county court to be detained.  It is not general practice for judges to sentence youths to the Juvenile Detention Center as an adjudication for their offenses, but this does happen occasionally.  Sometimes, due to the nature of the child’s acts, they may be transported directly to the Racine County Juvenile Detention Center in an effort to protect both the child’s safety and public safety. Any complaints, compliments, or other issues may be directed to the Juvenile Detention Center’s superintendent.

As a limited access facility, the Racine County Juvenile Detention Center may only be accessed through a series of doors and a controlled elevator.  The extra security precautions are in an effort to keep the detained juveniles safe and secure while they reside in the facility. Those wishing to access the facility may do so via the Human Services Department entrance during regular business hours (Monday-Friday 8am to 5pm).  There is also an after-hours entrance for later visitors and on holidays to the facility.

Case managers or parents may request a tour from the Juvenile Detention Center, but parents are not allowed to attend the tour.  Each tour lasts about 30 minutes and is led by detention center staff members. Tour appointments may be made for time slots Monday through Friday from 8:30am until 1pm.

All juvenile detainees being held in the Racine County Juvenile Detention Center are required to attend school on week days.  Parents of detainees are encouraged to bring the child’s school work to the facility to allow the student a change to keep up with their normal class schedule.  However, spiral bound notebooks and papers with staples or paper clips are not allowed in the detention center.
