The Racine County Sheriff’s Department has a vision statement talking about working to be the best law enforcement agency it can while making Racine County as safe as possible.  The Department’s mission includes working with the citizens to preserve public safety and order while being as efficient as possible with Racine County resources. The Racine County Sheriff’s Office also strives to offer the highest level of professionalism in its everyday operations.

As one of the largest detention facilities in the state of Wisconsin, Racine County Jail has a maximum bed capacity for 876 detainees. Physical and mental health services are offered within the jail whose facility fully covers a city block. Both food and commissary services for inmates are privatized through third party companies.  The Racine County Jail also houses one of the only in-facility AODA programs in the state. Jail detainees have chaplain services available along with a law library for their use.  The jail has a new, innovative video visitation system for inmates to use to contact their family and friends outside the facility.

Racine County Jail Commissary

Jail inmates are allowed to receive care packages from their families via the commissary system.  Loved ones are able to order hygiene items, snacks, treats, and holiday items for inmates.  The packages are delivered directly to the detainees from the commissary provider, Aramark. All inmate mail will be subject to search and all envelopes will be removed for the safety and security of the facility.  If detainees wish to send outgoing mail, they must use envelopes purchased from commissary and ensure that the only markings on the envelope are the outgoing address and return address.

County jail inmates are allowed to authorize one person to pick up their personal property from the jail.  The inmate must fill out a form with the person’s first and last name, and the person coming to retrieve the property must use his/her state identification card or driver’s license to prove identity.  Detainees area not allowed to release purses, wallets, or money to anyone for their own security reasons.  However, they are allowed to authorize the release of their cell phones, jewelry, keys, and insurance cards.  If the inmate is going to a state prison facility, he/she must arrange for the property to be picked up within 30 days of the transfer.

Racine County Jail includes a facility for offenders to be able to leave during the day to go to work. This dorm is called Huber.  Offenders must be able to provide proof of employment and conform to dorm rules such as all white underwear, socks, and t-shirts.  A wrist watch and a wind up alarm clock are also allowed in this dorm should offenders choose to bring them. Huber offenders are required to bring $210 in cash to pay for their $30 booking fee and $20 per day fee – the per diem fee must be collected nine days in advance.
