The Texas Juvenile Justice department’s Leaderships Academy is located at 9120 Katy Hockley Rd Hockley, TX. The facility has the capacity to hold 144 beds. It offers juveniles different programs to youth all over Texas. The involvement of families is crucial to the Leadership Academy. They believe the more parents are involved with their children’s plan, the better their chances of becoming rehabilitated. The leadership academy has events that are incorporated to encourage family involvement some of them include activities such as:

Family Liaison

The Texas Juvenile Justice department’s Leaderships Academy has a family liaison to help them stay involved with their child’s treatment. The family liaison will work with you and your child in regards to their individual case plan.

Visitation

Another way that families can connect with their children are through video conferences provided by the TJJD facility. Video conferences help families stay in contact with youth and eliminate the need to drive long distances.

Under state law for juvenile facilities in Texas, it is illegal for them to tell anyone that the youth is at the installation, and their information is kept confidential.

Youth offenders are not allowed to use the internet while they are at the facility. The use of email, Facebook, Twitter, or any other social media is not accessible to them.

The visitation schedule is on the weekends and occasionally on a particular scheduled weekday once weekly. In the case of a family emergency, you may visit the facility under particular circumstances. Visits from attorneys and own minister, pastor, or religious counselor are allowed any day of the week as long as that the offender is not in school or treatment groups. Please be sure to tell your case manager who they are so they can be put on your visitation list.

School

TJJD facilities have fully accredited schools on campus. That means all credits youth offenders earn in TJJD will count when they return home. Young people can also earn their GED or get their high school diploma in TJJD. Plus, they may take college courses and earn industry certifications in different programs like horticulture, welding, food handling, auto mechanics, and computer programming.

Returning Home

Providing family reunification programs are an essential part of the youth’s safe return home. These services are available for families that reside in certain counties in Texas. Programs are included that can provide parent counseling, groups, and case management.
