How can I maintain contact with an inmate?

There are a number of ways to stay in contact with an inmate while they are incarcerated. You can visit them personally, write letters, or speak to them by phone. There are specific guidelines that need to be followed in order to do any of these options. The important thing is to stay in contact with them in any way possible. It is vital to the inmate’s well-being that they have contact with the outside world so they know they are not forgotten and are loved. You can do that by any or all of the following:

  • Visit the inmate directly – Each jail has their own rules but all of them need you to dress appropriately and conservatively. You also must have proper government issued identification. Marion County Jail II requires the inmate to fill out a visitation list and only those on the list are allowed to visit. You need to call 317-266-0017 to schedule a visit one business day in advance. The lines are open from 9 am to 1 pm or until all of the visitation spots are filled. Visitations are only allowed on Tuesday through Saturday. There are no visits scheduled on holidays. Inmates are only allowed one visitation per week and one adult and one child can visit at any time. The visits last about 30 minutes. If you have any questions about visitations you can call the main number for assistance.
  • Write letters to your loved one – There are strict regulations regarding what you can send in the mail. You must use a business envelope that is legal or letter size. You must have your complete name and address in the upper left corner of the envelope or it will be discarded. Send your mail to the following address in the format shown below:
    • Inmates last name, first name, ID # or Gallery #
    • Marion County Jail II
    • 730 E. Washington Street
    • Indianapolis, IN 46202

All mail will be inspected by the facility staff to make sure there is no contraband. You can send photographs as long as they are not the Polaroid type. No obscene photos will be allowed. There can be nothing glued, stapled or taped to the paper. There also can be no stickers affixed on the letter. Remember that all letters will be read so don’t write anything in there that may lead to prosecution of you or your inmate.

  • Phone calls are also permitted by the inmate to anyone they choose on the outside. They must call collect and in most cases the receiving party must have money on their phone in order for the call to go through.
