San Bernardino County Jail – High Desert Detention Center Inmate Search
To locate an inmate in this facility, click on the following links:High Desert Detention Center serves as the San Bernardino county jail that houses accused offenders awaiting processing or trial in addition to short term offenders serving less than one year. This facility serves adult male and female offenders. It is classified as a Type II or medium security facility due to the level of supervision given to inmates. All movements within High Desert Detention Center are controlled meaning inmates are only allowed to move between buildings or units at pre-determined times of day. Because of the brief periods of time spent there by offenders, programs are limited to recreation, library, telephone, and common areas for socialization purposes. Adequate bathrooms and three meals per day are also enjoyed by offenders as is mandated by corrections protocol.
In 2014, a $145.4 million renovation was completed to expand the facility by 1,392 beds and increase the facility’s footprint to over eight acres. Medical and dental facilities were added during the renovation to decrease the need for the transport of offenders to other locations. This cuts down on safety and security concerns in addition to decreasing the need for staff time used away from High Desert Detention Center. The main focus of updating the facility was in an effort to relieve the effects of overcrowding as a result of the realignment of state inmates.
The renovation began in 2011 with the addition of a 25,000 square foot booking building and three housing units. Kitchen and laundry facilities were also remodeled. A new parking lot was added along with fire access roads. High definition security cameras were installed throughout the facility to increase safety and security. These will allow for facility staff to more clearly see the goings on of the facility 24/7. Not only does this help staff members feel safer within the facility, but it also increases the level of safety enjoyed by inmates since blind spots are much fewer.
All visitation with friends and family now take place via video monitor since offender movement has been restricted for security purposes. Offenders will stay in their housing unit in front of the monitors while visitors stay in the front of the facility. The implementation of this practice is not new in the area, but it is the largest start-up of it to happen all at one time.
The money for these changes came from state funding allocated for jail construction programs throughout the state. Specifically, the county applied to receive money from the Offender Rehabilitation Services Act of 2007. They were awarded $1 million for renovations and the hiring of new staff to man the additional space of the correctional facility.
High Desert Detention Center houses about 700 pre-trial inmates per day as the newest jail facility in San Bernardino County. Inmates are allowed to receive mail such as postcards, letters, and appropriate photos. Due to the updated technology, inmates are not able to send and receive a limited version of email to keep in easier contact with friends and family outside of the facility.
