There are three detention facilities in San Bernardino County. The Central Detention centre originally opened in 1971 and has served as the main jail for over 20 years. The other two facilities were built to ward off overcrowding and overflow from the main jail.

For the last decade, the Central Detention Centre has been the primary booking facility for the sheriff and police stations. The facility may house up to 850 federal inmates per day and have booked over 20,000 inmates in the last year.

The facility also hosts a juvenile program of intervention for minors between the ages of 13 and 17 who are at risk. The close-knit group of employees work to keep up and embrace the changing correctional environment to accommodate the needs of the community.

Guidelines for visitation at San Bernardino County Central Detention Centre

All San Bernardino County correctional facilities follow the same guidelines and rules regarding visitation of inmates. Visitation days are Wednesday to Sunday and appointments need to be booked a day in advance. All visitors must arrive 30 minutes prior to the appointment time to check in. Visitors who arrive late to their visit will be denied visitation for that day and need to reschedule on a later date.

Visitor’s personal belongings and vehicle are subject to search. Cellular phones, recording devices, photographic devices, and tobacco are prohibited and should be left in the car. Please note that the facility is not responsible for lost or stolen property.

Minors, age 17 years or under must be accompanied by an adult. They will not be permitted into a visit without an adult present and the adult is responsible for their behaviour while in the building and during the visit.

If bringing younger children to the facility, they need to be kept within arm’s length and only two children per adult will be permitted into the facility. If children are not attended to, the visit can be denied.

Proper attire must be worn during the visit, along with shoes at all times. Here are the prohibited items:

• Gang related attire or gang affiliated attire
• Hats
• Clothing that is sheer or transparent
• Tops with spaghetti straps, or halter, tank, or strapless tops
• Clothing that exposes genitals, midriff area, buttocks, chest, or breasts
• Clothing that reveals undergarments
• Shorts, skirts or dresses that are not longer than mid-thigh in length

All visitors must bring a valid id card with a picture that has been issued by a federal, state, or municipal facility, or a consulate in a foreign country. Some examples of proper identification include:

• DMV issued driver’s license
• DMV issued non driver’s license
• Department of Defence ID card
• Consulate id Card
• Passport
• S. Citizenship and Immigration Services id card

Please note that any individual who violates the rules of the facility, posted or spoken, or the law will be subjected to a terminated visitation. This may be for the current visit or any visits in the future. It is up to the officers at the facility to decide whether or not an individual is a security risk.

Always call in advance to ensure that the visits have not been cancelled because of a security risk. However, visits can be cancelled anytime up to the visitation time or during the visit time if the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Detention and Corrections Bureau deems necessary.
