General Information for the Marion County Juvenile Justice Center

The Marion County Juvenile Justice Center, also known as the Edward J. Ruzzo Juvenile Justice Center, is located at 1440 Mt. Vernon Avenue in Marion, Ohio. This facility resides approximately 40 minutes north of Columbus, Ohio. This facility is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year with business hours from 7:00am – 3:00pm, Monday – Friday.

The Marion County Juvenile Justice Center houses 36 youths, including 24 males and 12 females, at any given time. These youths range from in age from 10 to 17 years old. This facility contains 18 beds as well as 2 isolation cells and 2 intake cells. This facility serves several counties, including Marion, Morrow, Wyandot, and Crawford.

When a juvenile is arrested and taken into police custody, they are detained at the Marion County Juvenile Justice Center until their court hearing. During their stay at the facility, all juveniles receive medical services, education, and recreational and leisure opportunities. Additionally, all juveniles are entitled to visits with their parents or legal guardians, attorney, and their probation officer.

The Marion County Juvenile Justice Center’s website contains information about the center and their programs, probation terms, emancipation, pre-hearing and preliminary conferences, adjudication, and solutions for parents with children displaying unruly behaviors, arrests and the arrest process, and the sealing of records.

Currently, the Marion County Juvenile Justice Center has united with the Marion County Family Court and the Annie E. Casey Foundation in an effort to create and implement the Juvenile Detention Alternative Initiative. This initiative aims at decreasing detention populations and currently practices in 40 states in the United States of America.

 

Visiting Policies and Procedures for the Marion County Juvenile Justice Center

Visiting hours and times are as follows:

Tuesdays, 7:00pm – 9:00pm

Saturdays, 9:00am – 11:00am

Sundays, 2:00pm – 4:00pm

In order to schedule a visit, please call the center at 740 – 389 – 5476 at least 24 hours prior to the visit.

Except for visitors that are approved by the Detention Director, only parents and legal guardians are allowed to visit juveniles at the center. Visitors under 18 years old are not allowed. All visitors must have identification with them at the time of their visit and are subject to being searched. Visits are approximately 30 minutes. Only items that are approved by staff will be given to juveniles during their stay at the detention center.
