Ellis County Detention Center Information
The Ellis County Detention Center in Ellis County, Kansas serves as the county jail and is run by the Ellis County Sheriff’s Department. This facility – and so many others like it across the country – suffers from overcrowding. The Sheriff is working with the county to decide if the jail could be replaced or renovated to accommodate the inmates the jail has in custody on a day-to-day basis. If this is granted, the facility would be able to update its emergency medical building and fire station among other departments within the facility to better serve the inmates and the county as a whole.
Once the county is able to renovate the jail, Ellis County Detention Center staff will be faced with the problem of finding placement for the inmates. This displacement poses a security risk for the inmates and possible the entire county should the inmate do the unthinkable and manage an escape. Some of the inmates will be able to be temporarily transferred to other counties in Kansas, but the more serious inmates will have to be held in temporary “pods” or cells. However, jail staff does not like the idea of the temporary cells due to their lack of strong security features and the possibility of jail staff needing to walk outside to go from pod to pod.
Ellis County Detention Center Visitation

Visitors are allowed to speak with their inmate for up to 30 minutes, and these sessions are subject to monitoring by jail staff for safety and security purposes.
