The DeSoto County Juvenile Justice Facility was developed in 2007 and can house up to 42 individuals. The average length of stay at this facility is about 14 days. It is used to house individuals while they are awaiting placement in a more permanent facility or while awaiting a court date.

Very little is needed while in the detention facility. The only things that are needed are shampoo and deodorant that must be in clear containers. You also will need thermal underwear that is white, envelopes and stamps and any prescription medication you may be taking.

How long can they hold a juvenile before he goes to court?

Any juvenile must get a hearing within 48 hours of being arrested. This is not counting holidays or weekends. They also must get a hearing for sentencing within 21 days.

Can a juvenile in the center get or make phone calls?

A juvenile can get one phone call per day from a guardian or parent only. This phone call can last only 5 minutes.

Who can visit the juvenile while in the detention center?

The only people that are allowed to visit the juvenile while in the center are the parents or guardians. Clergy may visit if there is approval of the parent or guardian as well.

When can they visit?

Visitors can visit on Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. The hours of visitation are as follows:

Thursday – 7 pm- 7:30 pm

Saturday – 1:30 pm – 2:00 pm and 7:00 pm – 7:30 pm

What programs can be expected while staying at the facility?

Juveniles are expected to participate in programs that include education, substance abuse, health care and mental health services. The Department of Education provides educational services through the local school district. All medical and mental health services are contracted out. Usual days involve meals, school, hygiene, physical and education activities and all court related activities.

Cost of Care for your juvenile

The State of Florida may charge the parents or legal guardians for the care of the juvenile while they are in a detention facility. The cost, if applicable, is $5/day if they are in a secure detention facility or $1/day if they are under home supervision but under the guidance of the Department of Corrections. These fees may be waived if the court approves if it is found to present a hardship on the family. You can apply for a waiver if you feel this is true and you will need to supply a financial statement to the court for a determination. If your child ends up having the charges dropped or if he is acquitted, you will not be responsible for payment.
