General Information for the Kern County Work Release Center

The Kern County Work Release Center is located at 1415 Truxtun Avenue, Suite 100, in Bakersfield, California. This facility operates Monday – Friday, 8:00am – 4:00pm with a lunch from 11:45am – 12:30pm. In accordance with the Penal Code Section 4024.2, the Kern County Work Release Program was created in 1987 by the Board of Supervisors in order to provide inmates with an opportunity to become re-introduced in society after serving their sentence. Moreover, this program helps reduce the population in jails because it replaces incarceration with work opportunities for inmates. This facility supervises 400 individuals during any given moment. Further, this facility oversees inmates at 98 work sites throughout Kern County. Examples of the work that these inmates perform include manual labor in the Parks Department, Waste Management, and the Sheriff’s Office, to name just a few. While this program is beneficial for the inmates and the jail population, it also allows Kern County to save money for this work to be performed by paid employees.

The Kern County Work Release Center is categorized as “Virtual Jail” because it is an alternative custody program for inmates instead of being incarcerated. In addition to the Work Release Program, there is also an Electronic Monitoring Program and Sheriff Parole. For more information about either of these additional programs or if you are an inmate and wish to fill out an application for participation in these alternative programs, you may call (661) – 868 – 1900, fax (661) – 868 – 1901, or email EMP-SheriffParole@KernSheriff.com. You may also visit 1415 Truxten Avenue, Room 105 in Bakersfield, California or look at the website at http://www.kernsheriff.com/Detentions/Lerdo/VJ/EMP/Pages/default.aspx

Both of these programs are also categorized as “Virtual Jail” because they correspond with reducing jail populations and creating alternative opportunities for inmates besides being incarcerated.
