The High Desert Juvenile Detention and Assessment Centre houses female minors between the ages of 12 and 18. These minors are being detained for their hearings in the Juvenile Court. The Probation Department handles three juvenile facilities in the area and tries to provide the same services for all three.

Main Detention Reasons:

• Minor is waiting for housing that is suitable
• Awaiting a trial for a disposition in the Adult Court
• Minor is awaiting their court hearing
• Waiting to be committed to a State Prison
• Minor is waiting for their commitment to the Department of Juvenile Justice or DJJ

Living Units include:

The boys are then assigned to different living units that house around 20 boys at the same time that are around the same age. There are areas for sleep, showers, restrooms, and a common room with both structured activities and leisure activities. Each unit is supervised throughout the day by probation officers. These corrections officers offer counseling in individual and group sessions.

Individuals in custody will be transported to and from the courthouse by the probation officers.

High Desert Juvenile Court School

It is also supervised and operated by the court Superintendent of Schools in San Bernardino County and the same one that supervises the public schools in the county. The Western Association of Schools and Colleges accredited the programs in 2008 for six years. Each of the students goes to a full day of school.

Medical Services

Acute care is offered 24 hours each day. It includes services for pediatric care, psychiatric services, and reproductive health. Other services are available through ancillary services, like emergency specialty care, referred specialty care, or dental services.

Mental Health Services

Minors can receive mental health services from the Forensic Adolescent Services Team that was created to serve detainees in the facility.

Visitation at High Desert Juvenile Detention and Assessment Centre

Visits are allowed from guardians, parents, foster parents, grandparents, siblings over the age of 21 and if the detainee has no parents, aunts or uncles if the detainee has no parents or legal guardian.

Two people can visit a detainee at one time. Arrive 30 minutes prior to the scheduled visitation time to check in. If you arrive later than a half an hour ahead of time, the visitation may be denied. Both visitors must be present when checking in.

Visits may be canceled at any time if security issues arise in the facility. Please call before visiting to make sure that visits are allowed for a certain day if you are traveling from a long distance. However, the visits can be canceled anytime before or during the visit for security purposes.

All visitors must present their valid photo identification to the officer at the front door.

Visiting days and times depend on the unit and the visiting sessions are 2 hours in length one day a week.

All personal possessions should be kept in the car or secured in the lockers provided. No personal items will be allowed in the visit. The facility is not responsible for lost or stolen items from vehicles in the parking lot or in the public lockers.
