Harris County Youth Village is a youth correctional facility that offers rehabilitative programs. Educational, therapeutic, and medical services are provided to the child that is there as well as educational drug therapy. The behavioral therapy programs place emphasis on appropriate levels of aggression, decision-making abilities personal responsibility, as well as leadership skills. The facility has a capacity of 170 youths and in 2010 started a program for girls when the Burnett-Bayland Home closed. A Juvenile Justice Charter School teaches a curriculum that helps with residents creating resumes and learning how to fill out a job application. Those that attend GED classes are allowed to leave campus for the period of that class. Also, to these programs provided by the facility, there are privately funded programs for art, photography, and print shop.


Parent involvement and visitation are encouraged. At the Harris County Youth Village families often are included in counseling sessions. The facility provides secure detention of juvenile offender that were found guilty of violations of federal and state laws. Security is the most important aspect of this service, and the needs of the youths are critical. Keeping in mind that this is a juvenile facility all visitations with youth must be pre-authorized the minor’s probation officer. Only parents and legal guardians are allowed visitations with proper photo identification such as a driver’s license or federal identification card.

How to Report Abuse of a Juvenile at the Detention Center
