General Information for the Marion County Juvenile Detention Center

The Marion County Juvenile Detention Center is located at 1725 Shivers Road in Columbia, South Carolina. This facility serves as a short term, pre-trial detention center that houses a majority of juveniles from 46 counties in South Carolina. Juvenile offenders involved in Family Court and General Session cases are directed to this facility as well as any offenders accused of committing serious or violent offenses. This facility is home to both male and female offenders, between the ages of 11 and 17 years old. In 2001, a new Detention Center opened to expand the facility.

The Marion County Juvenile Detention Center provides excellent education programs for juvenile offenders. As part of the SCDJJ Special School District, all teachers are certified and each juvenile is placed in the same grade and classroom that they attended prior to their arrival at the Juvenile Detention Center.

In addition, the Marion County Juvenile Detention Center provides Medical Services and Mental Health Screenings during the juvenile’s stay in order to maintain and healthy environment and provide community-based services for the juvenile when they are released. This facility also makes referrals based on Medical Services and the Mental Health Screening to departments such as the dentist, psychologist, mental health liaison, or psychiatrist.

Juvenile Offenders are permitted to send and receive mail as well as make telephone calls. While all incoming mail is inspected by Staff, outgoing mail is not inspected. Juvenile Offenders are also given work assignments and program services to promote their well-being.

 

Visitation Information for the Marion County Juvenile Detention Center

Visitors are allowed to come to the Marion County Juvenile Detention Center during set visiting hours and with approval. Visitors must be at least 18 years old or older and can only be immediate family members. Moreover, at least one of the visitors must be older than 21 years old. Only two visitors are permitted during a single visit and all visitors must present a driver’s license or ID card. Lastly, visitors are not allowed to provide money, food, cigarettes, or any other contraband to juvenile offenders.
