History of Marion County Jail

The first Marion County jail was originally built in 1858. This facility functioned as a federal prison and housed ten prisoners during the Civil War. In 1862, the “Palmyra Massacre” resulted in the death of all ten prisoners. Therefore, the jail moved to its modern location, resulting in the original jail becoming a museum. The Marion County Jail is now located in Palmyra, Missouri at 1703 Marion City Road. As a maximum security level jail, this facility has the ability to house up to 104 men, women, and juvenile offenders, which range from low to high level offenses.

Visitor Information for Marion County Jail

The Onsite visiting hours at the Marion County Jail Facility are:

Monday-Friday, 5pm-10pm

Saturday-Sunday, 8am-12pm, 12:30pm-4:30pm, and 5pm-10pm

The Remote visiting hours for visiting with inmates at the Marion County Jail are:

Inmates are allotted 2 visits per week, either onsite or remotely. Remote visits require a fee of $10 dollars. Visitors are restricted on what they are allowed to bring into the visiting area, so it is advised that all of their belongings stay in the visitors’ car. Additionally, visitors are expected to wear appropriate clothing and demonstrate proper manners during their visit. Lastly, visitors are required to bring a valid ID with both their picture and birth date correctly documented on it.

Visiting Policies at Marion County Jail

Visits are permissible only if the inmate has been in custody for seven days. Two onsite visits as well as three remote visits are allowed per inmate each week. These visits may last up to twenty minutes. Only three visitors are allowed per visit. Children are able to visit at both of the onsite visits. The staff has discretion over which visitors are allowed. Visitors from more than 100 miles must fill out a special visitation form, be approved, and are restricted to only one hour visit each month.

Account Information for Marion County Jail Inmates

All money that is taken during the inmate’s intake process will be deposited into an account for that inmate. Additionally, money may be deposited by phone or money orders. Moreover, money may be deposited by visiting the Marion County Jail’s lobby kiosk or the website to be put into an inmate’s account. The inmate’s ID number is required for family and friends to put money into the account on the inmate’s behalf. Any funds placed into the inmate’s account will be approved within 24 hours and a receipt will be given to that inmate to confirm the transaction.
