Genesee Valley Regional Center is a detention center located in Genesee County, Michigan. The facility houses juvenile males and females between the ages of 10 and 17. A juvenile is incarcerated in this facility only temporarily. Juvenile inmates are transferred from this facility once their case proceeds through the juvenile court system and the court has reached a disposition.

The juvenile court system is significantly different than the adult court system. Juveniles are not prosecuted and subsequently punished for their alleged crime if found guilty. Instead, the juvenile justice system seeks to rehabilitate the offender. They enter court initially for a detention hearing. Following this hearing the juvenile’s case is adjudicated in court wherein evidence of the minor’s delinquent act or acts is reviewed. The court then makes a disposition for the juvenile which may include supervision, diversion, out of home placement or other services. Recommendations are made to the court prior to the disposition from the probation office, other social workers involved in the case and the attorneys involved in the case.

Genesee Valley Regional Center is one of 26 facilities in the state of Michigan that houses juvenile inmates. Inmates located in this facility may be in juvenile court in any county of Michigan depending on space availability at other locations.

It may be difficult to determine whether a juvenile is located in this facility as the privacy laws applicable to juveniles is not the same as for adults. Juveniles’ records are not public.

Inmate visitation is authorized at this facility. Visitors must be included on the inmates visitation list. Contact the facility for more information.

Inmates at this facility are given phone privileges that includes a 10 minute call. There are no commissary services or a system to provide inmates with money as this is only a temporary facility.

We suggest that if you can prove to be a relative or guardian of a juvenile who you suspect is located in this facility, call the facility or write down the email address of the director listed above to request information. You will likely be required to fax some sort of proof of relationship.

Michigan also has a statewide service called Vinelink which provides a free information and notification service to victims of crimes regarding the perpetrator’s custody status. A victim may register at www.VINELink.com or by calling 800-770-7657 to obtain a notification request form.
