Rules for visitors

You must be at least 17 years old to visit anyone in jail and you must have state or federal ID with your photo. If you are under 16, an adult must accompany you for the visit. An inmate can be visited by 2 adults and 2 children at one time. Inmates are allowed one 20 minute visit in one day. Your lawyer can visit you at any time on any day.

Items that are prohibited to be brought into the prison

When you are visiting an inmate, there are certain things you can’t bring with you. The following items are prohibited from being brought into the prison:

  • Purses, bags, wallets
  • Cell phones, any type of recording devices, writing utensils
  • Weapons
  • Food or liquid of any kind
  • No photographs can be left for the inmate. No mail or packages can be left either.

What can you wear?

Everyone has heard about what you should wear when you visit an inmate but, for some reason, visitors make this difficult. Pretend that you are going to visit your grandmother and you should be fine. This is not difficult and it upsets the prison staff as much as the visitor if they have to turn you away. Inmates get extremely upset if they can’t have their visits and cause problems within the prison so make sure you are dressed for the visit so everyone will be happy.

  • Make sure your dress, skirts, or shorts are no higher than the middle of your thigh
  • No see-through or revealing clothing
  • No sleeves shorter than halfway down your upper arm.
  • No tights or spandex unless you have shorts or skirt over them.
  • No offensive or obscene language on clothing and no gang affiliation

Remember that your visits are usually the highlight of an inmate’s day. The days go very slow for an inmate and these visits give them something to look forward to. Know your inmate well enough to visit him when he is awake and alert so he can make the most of your visits. Try to visit him on a day when he isn’t scheduled to do anything else to break up the day. The inmate is truly happy to see you and likes to know he is not forgotten.
